In was an emotional time in Court this afternoon as a 24-year-old, Grove resident, found himself facing charges related to the death of his wife in an accident.

The young man, Laurent McGarrell, stood before the Court in an emotional manner after he was charged for causing the death of his wife by dangerous driving.

The man cried as the Court was told that on the the 23rd July on the Providence Public Road, while his wife was a pillion rider, he rode motorcycle CJ 1957, in a manner that was dangerous to the public causing the death of the woman, Gaitri Sahadeo.

The accident reportedly took place as he lost control following a blowout of the back wheel of the motorcycle. The woman was pitched onto the roadway and died from her injuries.

In addition to the causing death charge,  the young man was also charged separately for breaching six other traffic offences, including operating the motorcycle under the influence of alcohol, riding without helmet, not being the holder of a drivers’s license, failing to have the pillion rider with a helmet, taking the motorcycle without the consent of the owner and not having a third party insurance.

The young man, while trying to fight back tears, explained to the Court that he is currently not in the right frame of mind as he is still trying to come to grips with the loss of his wife.

The Court heard that he has been in a withdrawn state since the accident. The Magistrate ordered a psychological evaluation for the man and he was released on a total of $200,000 bail.

He will have to return to Court on August 8th and 9th, for the continuation of the cases.

Meanwhile, relatives of the young man complained today that the Police failed to conduct any proper investigation although they are in receipt of surveillance video which captured the crash and the man’s efforts to control the motorcycle after the blowout.
