Guyana is prepared to offer Dominica as much help as it could, as the small Caribbean Island has been left bruised and battered by Hurricane Maria.

There are reports coming out of Caribbean media agencies that at least six persons may have been killed on the island following the passage of the Category 5 Hurricane.

President David Granger has indicated that Guyana stands in solidarity with the island state even as the country remains committed to extending support to other Caribbean states affected by other recent hurricanes.

Guyana’s Minister of State, Joe Harmon, has also stated that Guyana stands ready to lend technical and other forms of support as may be required by the hurricane ravaged islands.

Initial reports indicate that more than 70% of the homes in Dominica may have been destroyed. The category 5 hurricane ripped the roof off of the Prime Minister’s official residence, forcing his rescue.

Communication lines to the island have not yet been restored and airplanes have been encountering difficulties in their efforts to land.

Efforts are expected later today by some regional governments to gain access to the island.
