Guyanese High Commissioners and Ambassadors to be replaced in coming weeks

The Guyana Government has written to all Guyanese diplomats, including High Commissioners, Ambassadors and Consul Generals in all embassies notifying them of their likely replacement in coming weeks.

Minister of State Joe Harmon on Wednesday said that the notices have been served and the replacements and removals will occur by the end of October.

He explained that the remaining weeks will allow for the mandatory time frame for the serving of such notices to elapse. “But there has been notification to all of these Ambassadors and High Commissioners that there is a distinct likelihood that they are all going to be replaced,” Harmon said.

So far, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not confirmed any of the new Heads of Missions except for the new Ambassador designate to Venezuela, Career Diplomat Cheryl Miles.

She will replace Ambassador Geoffrey Da Silva.

Harmon did not want to say who will serve as the Ambassador to the United States and the Consul General in New York.

He told reporters that “there has been no announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs except the ambassador to Venezuela”.

Just after the May 11 elections and the installment of the new APNU+AFC government, Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greendige said that only Guyana’s Ambassador to Suriname, Keith George and the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, George Talbot are expected to be retained by the APNU+AFC administration.

He also stated then that new envoys would to be appointed to the US, UK and Canada among other places.
