Guyanese man in Australia sentenced to life for mother’s murder

A man who was born in Guyana and who killed his mother with a samurai sword and a knife has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murder.

A Supreme Court jury took just over six hours to find 21-year-old Queensland man Horace Loranzo Jones guilty of the murder of Roxanne Gilbert in 2012.

Jones stabbed his mother more than 30 times with a blunt samurai sword and a knife.

Her body was dumped in her own car and found the next day in bushland near Gladstone, in central Queensland.

Judge Duncan McMeekin has sentenced him to life in prison.

Roxanne and her son were both born in Guyana, and the pair migrated to Australia soon after Horace’s birth.
