The busy business district of Swan Street in Barbados came to a standstill on Saturday afternoon when a 36-year-old Guyanese woman was brutally murdered.

The woman has been identified as Onica King. She reportedly lived in Barbados for several years where she worked as a nail technician at the Mandela Mall in Swan Street.

The incident occurred around 2:45pm and according to reports King was attacked and stabbed to death in the presence of her young child.

The suspect is believed to be the woman’s Barbadian husband. He reportedly bolted from the scene as shocked onlookers attempted to offer her help and contact emergency services.

By the time the ambulance arrived at the scene, she had already passed away, still with her work apron on in the hallway of the mall. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Video recordings of the woman stumbling to her last breath have been posted on social media.

Barbados Police in an official statement said the Police received a report of a stabbing during an altercation between a man and woman. When officers got to the scene, the woman was found, but the suspect was nowhere to be seen. They are asking anyone with information to contact the Police’s emergency lines.

The investigation is ongoing.
