An 18-year-old, Port Kaituma man made his first appearance in Court today and admitted to stealing rum, beers, energy drinks and escaping Police custody.

The accused, Shawn Cornelius told the Court that he was “high” under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crimes.

The court heard that between the 21st and 22nd January, at the Port Kaituma bus park, he stole one case of XM rum, two cases of Banks Beer and 10 cans of XL Energy Drink, which were all the property of Latoya Tobin, who owns a shop in the area.

It was further alleged that on the28th January at the Port Kaituma Police Station, the same man escaped lawful custody.

In his explanation to the Court, the teen stated he worked for the shop where he stole the items from but was not being paid.

He said he took it upon himself after the shop was left unattended, to help himself to the beverages and liquor, but he was already drunk at the time.

The young man told the Court that he escaped from the Police station because he was hungry and was in the lockups for more than a day and was not offered anything to eat.

The matter was then adjourned to February 14th as the Chief Magistrate ordered a probation report before sentencing.
