Ill health forces Dr. Clive Jagan to resign from Parliament

Less than a year after his appointment, Opposition Member of Parliament Dr. Clive Jagan has tendered his resignation.

Jagan’s resignation took effect yesterday, February 10 and comes as the Assembly is preparing to vote on the 2016 National Budget.

The resignation was announced at the commencement of Thursday’s sitting by House Speaker Dr. Barton Scotland.

Dr. Jagan had been absent from several recent sittings of the House in late 2015 and early 2016.

The People’s Progressive Party is expected to put forward a name from its list of Representative at the 2015 elections to replace Dr. Jagan.

Two weeks ago, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo told members of the media that Jagan was ill and was receiving medical attention overseas.

At that time Mr. Jagdeo refused to comment of Jagan’s fate in the House.Dr. Clive Jagan and his family operate a dental clinic in Georgetown.

He spent several years overseas before returning to Guyana and getting involved in active politics.
