Independence Flag Raising Ceremony set to take place at Durban Park

The confirmation comes after initial plans to host the event at the Stabroek Market Square or the Parade Ground. However, the Culture Department stated that the event was shifted from the Stabroek square and the Parade ground because of the likely inclement weather, and to ensure that there would be no disruptions of normal life and business in that area, as there was much preparatory works to be completed.

The Department of Culture has announced that the Durban Park has been confirmed as the venue for the staging of the 2017 Flag Raising ceremony on May 25.

In a statement, the Department said stakeholders met on Monday at the venue to begin addressing necessary preparatory works for the event.

The Durban Park, which was constructed in time for last year’s 50th Independence celebrations, could accommodate as many as 30,000 patrons.  Over one billion dollars in government and private sector funds were used to build the facility, that has been underutilized since construction.

As part of the ceremony, the Culture Department has also announced that the selected cultural entrees for the upcoming Carifesta event in Barbados, will be showcased.

Director of National Events, Lt Col. Godfrey Bess, has indicated that the organizers want to ensure that the event is grand and as inclusive as possible.

Additionally, a week of activities have been planned from May 21 -27 to coincide with the Independence celebrations and the approach will see active participation from several ministries spearheaded by the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
