According to reports, Team Benschop supporter, Iqbal Rahim, was at the top of a ladder placing the campaign flags on the power pole, when Cromwell appeared and demanded that he stopped and remove the flags. When Rahim ignored the request, Cromwell reportedly started to shake the ladder until Rahim fell to the ground.

A police report has been filed against Independent Candidate for the Kitty area, Albert Cromwell, after he allegedly attacked and abused a member of the Team Benschop group because the man was placing campaign flags on power poles in the Kitty area.

According to reports, Team Benschop supporter, Iqbal Rahim, was at the top of a ladder placing the campaign flags on the power pole, when Cromwell appeared and demanded that he stopped and remove the flags. When Rahim ignored the request, Cromwell reportedly started to shake the ladder until Rahim fell to the ground.

The Independent Candidate then allegedly pounced on the already injured Rahim, admonishing him coming to his Constituency area to place campaign flags.

The Team Benschop group has condemned the action and has issued a call on all political parties, groups, individuals, the Diplomatic Corps. and the Elections Commission to condemn such actions.

The group said its supporter is currently nursing minor injuries following this assault and a report has been made to the police.

The group said the Kitty incident is not an isolated one and also complained about other political candidates showing up at the same spots to hold meetings when its meeting is already underway.

Guyanese will head to the polls for local government elections for the first time in over 20 years on March 18, 2016.  The elections in the towns and communities across Guyana are seeing large participation of candidates and several new groups and organizations in addition to the larger parties.
