Jagdeo claims President not sincere about Government and Opposition working together

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has rejected President David Granger’s peace-making attempt where he called for compromise and consensus,

Jagdeo’s criticism came moments after the President’s address to the Parliament on Thursday.

The opposition had walked out of the Assembly just before the President’s address, but despite their absence, Mr. Granger urged his coalition Members of Parliament to search for and find avenues for compromise and consensus.

During a press briefing after the Presidential address, Mr. Jagdeo criticized the President’s call for the two sides of the House to work together and said it seemed like an after thought.

“He said this many times, it’s all rhetoric. Has the President ever done anything significantly to move this forward?” Jagdeo said.

He further went on to question the President’s sincerity. “How could a President not know that his entire government is operating in a manner that is opposed to the broad statements that he makes?”

Jadgeo said the President was very hostile towards the PPP in his address, casting blame from the crime situation and other economic setbacks at the feet of the PPP.

“The speech shows how aloft the president is. He comes routinely and speaks about all sorts of issues that have little relevance to people’s lives,” he added.

The Opposition Leader singled out several statements by the President that he had a particular objection to which included the President’s talk about a decade of a grisly security situation accompanied by a parlous economic situation during the PPP rule.

Jagdeo boasted that the PPP had contributed to the growth of Guyana economy in a major way and said the President was out of touch with reality.

He said the President’s plan for the future included no new initiatives and was a repetition of PPP plans.

The Opposition Leader also questioned the government’s legislative agenda, which among other things will see the tabling of the Immigration (Amendment) Bill to delink the Immigration Department from the Guyana Police Force and the National Registration (Amendment) Bill which seeks to guard against identity theft by allowing for inclusion of the biometrics of citizens to be recorded on their national registration cards.

Jagdeo claimed that these decisions are being taken without consultation with the PPP and said it seemed like the moves were sinister. (Kurt Campbell)
