Jagdeo wants all MPs and Former Presidents to declare foreign assets

Opposition Leader and former President Bharrat Jagdeo wants legislation to be introduced that would result in all members of parliament and former Presidents, declaring assets that they might have stashed outside of Guyana.

In an interview with News Source, Mr. Jagdeo said there have been many accusations about members of the former government and other public officials having assets stashed outside of Guyana. He believes public declarations may be the best way to go.

“There are these charges that people stash large sums of money abroad. I am in favour of  a public declaration and when I say public, I mean not just to the Integrity Commission, but something tabled in the Parliament, where the media and the entire country could see the entire declaration of our assets abroad”, Jagdeo said.

The former President and a number of the former Minister of the former PPP Civic administration have been accused in the past of having houses and large financial savings outside of Guyana.

Mr. Jagdeo said he is prepared to support the declaration of all assets of all Members of Parliament and former Presidents that may be out of Guyana. He said if members lie on their declarations, he believes “some time in jail” should be the result for their dishonesty.

He said he would work with the government to push the legislation through the National Assembly so that “these wild charges of people stashing billions of dollars abroad could be investigated and then if they find that you have lied on your declaration, you would then be in serious trouble”.

The Opposition Leader said he also believes that all Members of Parliament should be forced to make public, their contributions to the Guyana Revenue Authority over the past 10 years, all in the name of better transparency.

Mr. Jagdeo has vowed to lead a crusade against corruption and to support all forms as transparency during his time as Opposition Leader.

As President, he was accused of turning a blind eye to both.
