Jet-ski racer dies as passenger of car in East Coast drag race

A late night “Fast and Furious” style drag race along the East Coast Demerara road has left a champion jet-ski racer dead. Police  have identified the dead man as 19-year-old Chris Baichan, of Oleander Gardens, ECD. The incident took place just after 2 o’ clock on Sunday morning.

Baichan is well-known in the boat and jet-ski racing circles and has won several honors at various regattas across the country.

According to reports, the young man was a passenger in his friend’s motor car that was drag racing along the roadway in the Plaisance area when the driver lost control and slammed into a fence. Several other cars were reportedly part of the drag race.

The driver has been identified as Christopher Bridgemohan. Both men were rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where Baichan was pronounced dead while the driver, Christopher Bridgemohan, was admitted with multiple injuries.

According to a police report, “The driver was tested and found to be above the legal limit in terms of the consumption of alcohol. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations”.

Police sources have told News Source that the men were reportedly drag racing at the time of the accident and appeared under a heavy influence of alcohol.  One police source explained that the driver was so drunk that when he was being assisted, the stench of alcohol greeted those who came to his aid and he could not even stand on his own.

Some persons in the East Coast community of Plaisance explained that there would be speed racing among young drivers late at nights and they would usually speed off from the scene whenever the police would be called.

Guyana has recorded over 110 road deaths for the year so far and most of those road fatalities are being blamed on speeding and drunk driving.
