Linden forms Trust for new TV Station

The Region 10 Administration has started work on forming a Trust that will overlook efforts for the Region to be granted a TV station license and get a TV station into operation within months.

Speaking in the National Assembly on Monday, Chairperson of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority Bibi Shaddick  who is a Member of Parliament for the People’s Progressive Party said she has already made it clear that the Broadcasting Authority could only issue licenses “to a Company or a Trust, not a Country or Region”.

Today Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon said the Region is moving in that direction and could make submissions to the Broadcasting Authority before the end of this week. Solomon said the Regional Administration has gone a very far way in “getting everything together in keeping with the law as we apply for the TV license”.

A Region 10 Broadcasting Company is expected to be formed and that company will work along with the trustees.

Shaddick told the National Assembly that the Board of the Authority has already given a commitment that once all documents are produced; they will make moves to ensure that the residents of Linden benefit from a new TV station that is properly registered.

Residents of Linden and Region 10 have been pressing the administration to open up the airwaves in the town and allow the Region to have more TV stations. As it is now, the National Communications Network is the only TV station that operates in the town on two channels.

As part of an agreement reached between the Government of Guyana and the Region 10 Administration last year, the Government gave an undertaking to return to the community one of the channels which was a gift to the community from the Green Mining Company.

Lindeners are also pushing for TV stations that are available in Georgetown to be granted licenses to they could relay their broadcasts and signals to the bauxite township.
