Local Government Elections set for November 12

Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan has announced that November 12 is the designated date for Local Government Elections.

According to the Department of Public Information, the order with the date is to be gazetted by end of today.

The Government has allocated $2.9B to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for preparations for the elections, which have already started.

The announcement of a date comes even as the coalition partners, APNU and AFC are to finalize their agreement to contest the polls. They contested the last Local Government Elections as a Coalition body two years ago, but with no formal agreement in place.

The two have since been meeting to iron out an agreement. Earlier this week, PNC General Secretary, Amna Ally, indicated that the APNU has already started its campaign across the country. The AFC has already launched its own campaigning too and it is likely that the two will head into the polls as one party.

Meanwhile, the People’s Progressive Party has also been in the various communities across the country campaigning.

Just this past weekend, the Guyana Elections Commission hosted training programmes for persons who will serve as election day staff.

This is the second time that local government elections will take place since the coalition government took office in 2015.  Before that, there was a hiatus for more than two decades.
