A taxi driver who was already under investigation for a 2015 fatal accident, was today charged and remanded to prison for another fatal crash and causing the death of British citizen, Bibi O’Donovan by dangerous driving.

Sixty six-year-old Haroon Eshak of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD)appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul today in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge that stemmed from the August 17, 2016 accident.

It is alleged that on August 17, at Chelsea Public Road, Mahaica, E.C.D, Eshak drove motorcar HC 6753 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of O’Donovan.

Police Prosecutor David Goodridge strongly opposed bail for the accused citing the fact that he is currently under investigation by Police in relation to another accident at Berbice which claimed the lives of three persons in 2015.

In relation to this accident, the prosecutor explained that Eshak drove a motorcar under a truck which resulted in the death of three persons.

Goodridge told the court that in the current matter, the daughter of the deceased, who was injured in the accident, is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a critical condition.

According to the police, Eshak was driving the motorcar in which O’Donovan and her daughter were passengers, on the southern side of the Mahaica Public Road proceeding west. They were heading to the airport for a  connecting flight home.

He was reportedly driving at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a motor lorry that was parked alongside the same road.
