Miner dies after Mahdia mining pit collapse

A gold miner died this afternoon following a mining pit collapse at Jumbie Creek in the Mahdia community. Another miner is in a critical condition.

The names of the two miners have not been released.

The incident reportedly took place just after 12 noon on Thursday as the miners were in the pit digging for gold. According to reports out of the area, several miners quickly rushed to the aid of the trapped miners and were able to pull him out from below the red mud and rush him to hospital.

Sources in the area said the young man “was in and out of consciousness” as he was being hurried to the hospital, where he eventually died.

Just last month, 10 miners lost their lives when a mining pit collapsed at Konawaruk in Region 8. The owner of that mine was found to be in breach of several safety regulations and could face charges for the deaths.

The Director of Public Prosecutions is expected to give advice in that matter.

The Ministry of Natural Resources now falls under the Ministry of the Presidency. There continues to be calls for more monitoring of mining areas especially where many small-scale miners carry out their trade.
