Minister Volda Lawrence offers apology to one of the security guards in parking lot fracas with Broomes

Two days after a confrontation between two private security guards and the Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources Simona Broomes and her driver, the Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, has met with one of the security guards and has offered an apology.

Lawrence’s meeting took place last evening at the same New Thriving Restaurant that Broomes was heading to when the parking lot row took place on Sunday night.

In a statement on her official Facebook page, Minister Lawrence who became the only other Government Minister besides Broomes to speak on the issue said “Tonight I met young Josh Rambarran a security guard at New Thriving Restaurant Providence, who told me a story about what happened to him on Sunday last. According to him, he was wrongfully arrested and detained for 16 hours. From the bottom of my heart I apologised to him and said I was sorry. Humility and wisdom are character traits we must always ask of our Creator”.

Rambarran was one of two security guards that was involved in the parking lot row with Minister Broomes and her driver and is not the one who was seen in released video recordings of the incident carrying a shot gun. Broomes had claimed that she and her driver were threatened and cursed out by the gun carrying security guard.

In a statement in another section of the press, the security guards have denied Minister Broomes’ account.

The two security guards were taken into custody on Sunday night and eventually released on self bail hours after, as the Police announced that it was launching an official investigation and that “initial enquiries revealed that both parties seemed to have been very aggressive”, during the parking lot row.

A video recording of the incident has also been provided to the Police. That recording, parts of which have been making the rounds on social media, shows Minister Broomes’ driver leaving the vehicle and removing a sign to access an area to park. Moments later the security guards could be seen placing the sign back in front of the vehicle, preventing it from driving any further.

After a short while, Minister Simona Broomes could be seen exiting the vehicle and throwing the signs aside to allow the vehicle access. After a while, the vehicle then enters the area to park as the provided video recording ends. Broomes had claimed that during the row, the armed security guard hurled several expletives at her and her driver and at one stage the security guard raised/cranked his gun.

The meeting between Minister Volda Lawrence, who is also Vice Chairperson of the PNCR, and the security guard took place at the same New Thriving restaurant, as she was heading back to Georgetown last night from the launching of her campaign poster for Chairperson of the People’s National Congress, which is the largest party in the coalition government. The party’s internal elections will take place in August.

Minister Lawrence has had no meeting or discussion with Minister Broomes on the issue.

Broomes who has chosen not to offer any new comment, has been on the PNC campaign trail for Minister of State, Joe Harmon, who is also seeking the Chairmanship of the 60 year old party.
