In wake of the latest domestic plane crash, that Government has mandated the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to ramp up checks and inspections of aircraft and facilities.

In a statement last evening, State Minister, Joe Harmon, said yesterday’s plane crash was the third over the past month and it leaves the government very concerned.

He said the government has asked the Director of Civil Aviation for there to be more frequent levels of inspection of small aircraft and their pilots and the facilities they use to ensure that there is a higher level of safety in the operations.

The government also wants to see an increase in the level of investigation and oversight of all of the operators to ensure that the serviceability of these aircraft is checked and that the flying time and hours of the pilots also be checked.

Minister Harmon said safety is a major concern for the administration and it is for that reason that the Government has been expending large amounts money in the development of airstrips, particularly those located in the hinterland.

As the probe continues into the latest crash, the government has extended its sympathy to the relatives and friends of pilot, Imran khan.
