Nandlall was not fired because he was “set up” by his school friend -Ramotar

Days after sacking his Health Minister, President Donald Ramotar continues to defend his desision not to budge on demands from several local and international bodies for him to also let go of his Attorney General, Anil Nandlall.

Appearing on the local radio talk show, ‘Hard Talk’ on Sunday, the President said the issue involving his Attorney General amounts to treachery in which he was set up by a friend.

Mr. Ramotar explained that the AG, unlike former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, showed immense remorse and never repeated the words he mentioned in the threatening and profanity laced recording between himself and a Kaieteur News reporter.

“I think that he was speaking to a friend he went to school with at Queens College. It was treachery on the part of a friend who recorded him and egged him on to speak,” the President fumbled in his response.

He said Nandlall did not deserve to be fired but he was reprimanded “for not showing enough judgement to fall into school a trap.”

Nandlall has since apologized for his utterances in conversation which he claimed was taken out of context and others believe was threatening and of bad taste in which he boasted of wealth and influence.

Nandall was recorded telling a Kaieteur News reporter that he should leave his job because men with guns were going to visit the newsroom. He also made some sexist remarks about a female reporter.

But the  President, two weeks before elections, fired his Health Minister who had also apologised for his ‘slap and strip’ comments directed to female rights activist, Sherlina  Nageer.

However, Nageer has since said that the move was merely an elections gimmick and said if the Head of State was serious about these issues then he ought to relieve Nandlall of his duties.

Ramotar insist however that both his Ministers were set up but reasoned that Nandlall showed remorse, inferring that Dr. Ramsaran didn’t.

Ramsarran called the activist a miscreant who was in need of psychiatric help, while he addressed a gathering of regional health officials, the day after issuing an apology for his recorded remarks. The second set of remarks were also recorded and sent to media houses.
