National Assembly hears of mining sector becoming more leveled playing field for all Guyanese

The National Assembly was told on Wednesday of a turnaround in the mining and wider extractive industry, a change that is characterized by greater transparency and accountability, according to Minister Simona Broomes.

The Minister within the Minister of Natural Resources, delivered her presentation in the ongoing budget debates and said there is now a clear vision for the mining and extractive sector.

The vision she said will seek to ensure there is a leveled playing field and a sector free from gender bias and human trafficking.

“In the 2018 budget, this government will work with all stakeholders to put together a policy that will guide sector,” Broomes announced.

The Minister said her government inherited a divided sector in which landlordism and bullyism were allowed to thrive but promised that under her stewardship this will be fixed.

An initiative that is already supporting the turnaround plan is the newly established syndicate initiative.

Bringing the House up to date on this enterprise, Broomes said there are now 13 syndicates with 339 members registered allowing for thousands of families to benefit from Guyana’s natural resources.

“The syndicate initiative is up and running well,” she said.

She explained that the government’s vision will allow all miners in the sector to enjoy the administration’s promise of a good life.

“In this year’s budget consultation miners came together, there is no longer a divided sector.”

In commending the budget for passage, Broomes said she has no doubt about where the sector is headed.
