NBS managers charged for wrongful confinement of customers during standoff with Court Marshals

Two months after six managers along with other staff members of the New Building Society were arrested and questioned about unlawfully detaining customers, charges were filed in the matter today against three of the managers.

The three, Anil Kishun, Anil Beharry and Deka Tulurum stood before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and denied the allegations.

The Court heard that on the 23rd January at the Avenue of the Republic building the three managers all held Ganish Kalicharan, Godish Singh, Alex Moore, Joseph Allen, Gina Arjoon, Patrick Higgins, Martin Brown and Ganish Hira in wrongful confinement.

The bank moved to lock its doors and lock customers in as the High Court moved to levy on its assets in a $59 million judgement for its former CEO.

Upon their arrival at the NBS, the marshals started to seize vehicles but were prevented from doing anything else as the bank locked its doors.

Even when the Police arrived on the scene, the bank kept its doors locked. The standoff continued for a number of hours and ended late the afternoon, when customers were finally allowed to leave and the managers were arrested after statements were taken.

The bank has since settled the matter with its former CEO but the Police after a full investigation went ahead with charges today.  All three of the accused were released on self bail following the hearing. They have been ordered to return to Court at a later date for the continuation of the case.
