NCN fires senior news editor and news editor over $68,000 fraud

The National Communications Network on Thursday afternoon fired two of its news editors over a $68,000 fraud that involved hotel booking and bogus receipts.

Senior News Editor and former anchor Eddy Layne and News Editor Adele Rampersaud were sent packing by NCN management following the findings of an investigation into an incident that occurred during the elections campaign.

According to reports, NCN management became suspicious of some receipts that were presented by the Senior News editor and a news editor during the run up to the May 11 elections.

The receipts were for accommodation in Bartica for the news team that covered the PPP political rally in the region. News Source understands that the receipts did not add up to the amount of money that was given to the two editors for their travel and accommodation.

Once the investigation started, the company’s auditors travelled to the Bartica community where checks at the hotel revealed that while rooms were booked, the two never stayed at the rooms and only left their equipment at the hotel.

A staffer of the hotel told the investigators that the Senior Editor only paid for two double rooms for other staffers but requested receipts for seven single rooms.

When the hotel employee explained that he could not offer the receipts, the investigators were told, that the senior editor offered the hotel staffer money to write the receipts in an old receipt book.

The old receipts that the hotel no longer use, were the ones presented to management by the news editors.

A senior official at the company confirmed the dismissal and said it was in keeping with the company’s policy when such cases are found after an investigation.
