New 911 Emergency system to become operational within weeks

A new and improved 911 emergency call system should be put into full operation within the next few weeks. That assurance came from Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan.

During a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Minister Ramjattan explained that the new system is already in place but is currently being tested by the two telephone companies and training of operators is also taking place.

Earlier this year, Digicel, won the contract to provide and set up the 911 emergency equipment.

For several years, citizens have complained about the emergency system not working. There have been instances where 911 calls went unanswered or there was no emergency response to the emergency calls made.

The Public Security Minister made it clear earlier this year that the government was going to move to correct the situation.

The new system is expected to connect callers to the police station closest to their location. Recently the 912 system for fire and medical emergencies was improved and it has been working well so far.
