New Hope, Peter’s Hall, Eccles and Houston among considerations for new Demerara Bridge

The first phase of the feasibility for the new Demerara River Crossing has been completed and will be opened for consultations by the second week in April.

This is according to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure.

The feasibility study is being conducted by Lievense CSO – a Dutch company. The company led a presentation today where the announcement about the new locations were revealed.

The presentation, which was made by Arie Mol of Lievense CSO, was attended by Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, a team from the Public Infrastructure Ministry, and General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation, Mr. Rawlston Adams.

Some of the possible locations for the new River Crossing identified include: New Hope, Peter’s Hall, Eccles, and Houston, with lengths ranging from approximately 580 metres to just under 2,000 metres.

According to the Ministry a more detailed presentation of the feasibility study is expected to be made at a later date, while draft reports will be made to Cabinet and then open to consultation by the second week of April.

Last year, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon had said that the company which was conducting the study would examine the possibility of a public-private partnership.

The Minister had also explained that a pre-feasibility study was done by the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation in 2013, and that it revealed that there is need for a fixed high-span bridge across the Demerara River.

The current bridge has a retractor span that opens to allow ships to pass.
