Despite the ban on the importation of vehicles that are more than eight-years-old, used car dealers have been continuing the importation of old vehicles, and the Guyana Revenue Authority is now warning the importers to desist from the practice.

Only vehicles that were manufactured in 2008 and beyond will be allowed to be imported during 2016.

If the importers continue to import the old vehicles, they could see their imports being dumped or forfeited.

In a statement on Tuesday. the revenue collection agency reminded that legislation putting a halt to the importation of vehicles that are more than eight-years-old, came on stream from May 1, 2016.

The GRA said it had already issued notices about the new law in the media “and therefore urges vehicle importers to desist from purchasing such vehicles and attempting to import same since vehicles in contravention will be forfeited and disposed thereof, in accordance with the provisions of the Customs Laws. Other fines and penalties may also be imposed.”

The GRA also said that importers should note that the restriction excludes heavy-duty vehicles, namely trucks, lorries, vehicles used in the agricultural and industrial sector and special purpose vehicles.

The measure to put an end to the importation of old vehicles was announced by the Finance Minister during his 2016 budget presentation in January. The administration is providing concessions for the importation of newer vehicles as the country seeks to develop a green economy.
