Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud has disclosed that the execution of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing is “back on the front burner” as new evidence has surfaced in the case.

He said police investigators are currently pursuing new leads on the grounds that the murder may have been political motivated.

“Yes! It is back on the front burner, the Major Crimes Investigation Unit is on it,” he said.

Persaud told News Source this morning that an individual was recently questioned in relation to the shooting death of the former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier and he noted that another individual is being sought.

The Police Commissioner refused to say whether either of the persons were known characters or politically connected.

He however, stated that the new evidence has placed police investigators along a line of inquiry that the murder may have been a politically motivated crime.

He said, in the past, investigators had ran into dead ends pursing this line of inquiry but explained the new evidence has set police on this path once again.

“At the same time I am not saying any political activist may have had something to do with it,” Persaud added as he explained that the murder could have been done by individuals who Crum-Ewing may have personally offended.

The Police Commissioner reminded that the murder was committed weeks before Guyanese voted in General elections.

The activist was gunned down while walking through the streets of Diamond with a loud hailer encouraging citizens to vote the PPP out of office.

Political watchers and commentators are convinced that the murder was politically motivated.

Crum-Ewing had carried out a one man protest outside the office of the Attorney General for months.  He had also complained to the police about threats that were being made against his life. He had complained too that the police were not taking his concerns seriously enough.

The 40-year-old was shot five times. Three of those shots were to the head at close range.
