No vindictiveness in GRA’s demand for tax payments from PPP MPs -Jordan

Finance Minister Winston Jordan, today assured the Opposition People’s Progressive Party, that there was no deliberate or vindictive move to seek out its Members of Parliament who owe property taxes.

He told the media at a year end briefing that the GRA is doing its work and even he (Jordan) was sent a notice by the Revenue collection agency for outstanding property taxes.

The Minister said he has since paid his taxes and his accounts are up to date.

Last week, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, complained to the media that five Members of Parliament for the PPP had been sent GRA demand letters for taxes that they owe for their property.

While Jagdeo did not dispute that taxes were owed by the MPs, he said he was concerned about the timing of the demand letters since they were dispatched during the budget debates as the PPP was making its case against the 2017 budget.

The GRA Commissioner General, Godfrey Statia, has since made it clear that the GRA was not playing politics with the issue and it was just going after money owed.
