North Ruimveldt man charged for receiving $5.5 Million by false prestense

A North Ruimveldt youth was today charged and placed on $150,000 bail when he made his first appearance in Court and was charged for obtaining money under false pretense.

The 21-year-old man, Michael Sonaram, allegedly claimed that he was in a position to obtain a gun license and a national ID card for a friend and also had the ability to import a motor vehicle.

Sonaram denied all charges.

The Court heard that between the 1st and 31st October, with the intent to defraud, the young man obtained a sum of $5.5 M from Hamid Singh, while falsely pretending that he was in a position to import a motor vehicle.

During the same period, he allegedly received $300,000 after convincing the victim that he was in a position to obtain a firearm and a firearm license for him.

It was further alleged that between the 1st and the 30th September the accused further obtained $25,000 while pretending that he could grant the victim a National Identification Card.

After the charge was read, the Police Prosecutor had no objections to bail being granted but asked that the accused reports to the major crime unit every week until the completion of his trial.

With no objections to bail, the Chief Magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of $150,000 and instructed him to return to the Court early next year.
