NY Doctors find cocaine in Guyanese woman’s body

A Guyanese woman who was able to make it pass security at the Cheddi Jagan Airport and New York’s JFK Airport with over half a pound of cocaine in her body now faces the possibility of life in prison.

The woman, 43-year-old Odetta Clarke was placed under arrest at a Brooklyn Hospital back in August, after she rushed into the emergency room complaining about severe stomach aches a day after arriving in the U.S from Guyana.

Doctors at the Interfaith Medical Center hurried the woman into surgery to see the source of her severe abdominal pain. Instead of a lingering medical condition, the Doctors found 50 small packets of cocaine in the woman’s small intestines and colon. The surprised surgeons immediately contacted Police and the woman was placed under arrest after surgery.

The 50 packs of cocaine weighed a total of 8 ounces and the woman told investigators that she had swallowed the packs of cocaine in her native Guyana and traveled to the United States on August 23, 2013.

According to the New York Post, “The five-foot-five, 130-pound Clark told hospital staffers she had swallowed the pellets packed with cocaine a day earlier. Hospital staff turned the pellets over to cops and Clark was held at the hospital for almost two weeks, court papers state.”

She was charged with drug trafficking and placed on US$1Million bail. She remains in custody.
