One man dead, another injured as ice house equipment explodes during repairs at Houston

An electrical operator died on the spot Sunday morning as an explosion rocked the KB Enterprise ice house at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara.

The dead man, according to the Fire Service, has been identified as Bagwandie Lall, of Diamond Housing Scheme.

According to reports, Lall and another employee of the company were carrying out repairs to a compressor on the top floor of the three-story facility when the incident occurred. Lall was pitched from the building and it is believed that he broke his neck and hit his head as his body landed on the concrete below.

The other man was badly injured and rushed to the Georgetown Hospital.

According to reports, the two men were welding at the same time as they were trying to add gas to a compressor for the ice making facility.

The facility is located on a wharf and usually caters for fishermen coming in from the sea. A fisherman who was nearby said he heard the loud explosion and knew immediately that someone must be dead.

His suspicion was confirmed as he hurried across to the scene.

The Fire Service rushed to the scene with two fire tenders and two ambulances. The Fire Service received the call about the explosion just before 11am.

It is suspected that the business may have been in breach of several occupational health standards.
