Opposition Leader calls on Government to reduce fuel prices at GUYOIL stations

At a time when fuel prices are rising globally, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo believes the Government needs to move and ensure reductions locally at the pump.

According to Jagdeo, the Government has the fiscal space to put systems in place that will see less pressure at the pump.

The state-owned Guyana Oil Company is currently selling fuel at the lowest compared to its competitors, SOL and Rubis.

Minibus drivers along major routes were today engaged in the second day of strike action and protest as they demanded that fares must be increased in wake of the increase in gas prices.

But Jagdeo does not believe that commuters should be made to endure such hardships. He used his weekly press conference today to urge the government to intervene and offer relief to citizens.

Jagdeo was very critical of the government’s silence on the issue. He said once GUYOIL further reduces its prices, the private competitors will be forced to do the same.

“I don’t think they will do so because the sole purpose of government is to collect revenue and take as much as they can.”
