The money is expected to supply the four main prisons with food for the next year.

The Camp Street Prison in Georgetown, which houses the largest population of prisoners, will receive dietary supplies totaling $120 million, State Minister Joseph Harmon disclosed on Wednesday.

A breakdown shows that a contract totaling $1.3 million was awarded to Nigel’s Supermarket, another for $1.2 million to Guyana Trading Company, a $49.8 million contract was awarded to Paradise Food Court while Guyana Green Grocery will receive $65.6 million to supply dietary items to the Georgetown prison.

Another $50.2 million will be spent to provide food at the New Amsterdam Prison where female inmates are held.

Four suppliers have all been awarded contracts here.

The government will spend another $75 million to provide food supplies to the Mazaruni prison where persons serving long sentences and sentences for serious offences like murder are held.

While $20 million will be spent on providing dietary supplies to the Lusignan Prison.

Harmon could not provide an exact number for the population at these prisons.

He indicated however that there was a reduction at the Camp Street Prison which once housed several hundred more persons than the facility was built and renovated to accommodate.

Prisoners have been moved from Camp Street to other prisons.
