Peacemaker shot dead at 14 Miles mining camp

A miner who decided to act as a peace maker in an argument between two other men was shot dead late on Monday night at 14 Miles, Bartica in the Essequibo region. The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Selwyn Bess of Grove on the East Bank of Demerara.

Police Investigators have moved into the community to conduct their probe. According to eyewitness reports, two miners were having a heated argument that appeared to be escalating into a full brawl late on Monday night. One eyewitness told News Source that as the two men continuously threatened each other, the other miner decided to separate the two and bring an end to the fight.

It was while he was separating them that one of the men whipped out a firearm and fired a single shot which struck Best. The man was adamant that he had not intended to shoot the peacemaker but was trying to send a warning to the other man who was involved in the argument.

The miner who fired the gun is in police custody.
