Police Corporal remanded over possession of illegal AK-47 and ammunition

36-year-old Police Corporal, Shevon Marks, was today remanded to prison after the Chief Magistrate refused him bail on charges of possession of an illegal weapon and possession of illegal ammunition.

Marks, who has been a member of the Guyana Police Force for the past 17 years, was arrested on February 28, as he drove a car out of the Tactical Services Unit compound of the Guyana Police Force with an AK-47 assault rifle and matching rounds in the car’s trunk.

The Court was told that Marks was being watched by  Police investigators after they received reports that he may be involved in weapon and ammunition smuggling.   On the day in question, according to the Prosecutor, the Police Corporal was spotted loading the weapon into the vehicle.

He was stopped as he drove out of the compound.  A search of the vehicle unearthed the AK-47 along with the matching rounds. He was placed under close arrest and then later on open arrest, as the investigation was launched.

Last week the Guyana Police Force issued a wanted bulletin for the Policeman claiming that he had escaped. Two days later, the young man turned himself into Police in the company of an Attorney and explain that he had not escaped but had been given leave by a doctor over an illness.

Today in court, the policeman’s attorney, Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos, complained about the investigation by the Police Force as he declared the innocence of his client. DeSantos’ application for bail was denied and the Police Corporal will remain in remand until the next court date of March 22, 2017.
