Police Force reports decrease in murders, but increase in robberies and reports of rape

In its latest crime report, which covers the first five months of the year, the Police Force this morning reported a 7% decrease in serious crimes.

While the Guyana Police Force is reporting that serious crimes are on the decline when compared to the same period last year, robberies under arms and cases of rape have seen increases.

In its latest crime report, which covers the first five months of the year, the Police Force this morning reported a 7% decrease in serious crimes.

According to the Police there was a 23% decrease in murders, but an 8% increase in robberies where no instruments were used and a 7% increase in robbery under arms where firearms were used.

However, there was a 28% decrease in robbery under arms where instruments other than firearms were used.

The report also found a 15% decrease in robbery with violence and a 33% decrease in robbery with aggravation.

There was a 4% increase in reports of rape and a 3% increase in burglaries.

Thirty-six murders were recorded in the first five months of the year. Of that number, 17 were deemed disorderly, 9 were of a domestic nature and seven were related to robberies. The remaining three did not fall into a known category.

The Police Force also reported today that fifty-five (55) illegal firearms have been taken off the streets so far this year, compared to sixty-four (64) for the corresponding period last year.
