Police Force Traffic Dept. launches “Operation Safeway” as road deaths continue to climb

With Guyana recording 89 deaths on the country’s roadways over the past eight and a half months, the Guyana Police Force is preparing to become more aggressive against the chaos on the country’s roadways that appears to be responsible for many of the traffic accidents.

Additional police traffic ranks will be dispatched across the country with specific areas being targeted.

The Georgetown and East Bank Demerara area, have recorded the majority of road deaths this year. The Berbice and West Coast Demerara areas come in second and third.

Acting Commissioner of Police, David Ramnarine, told a media briefing this afternoon that the situation on the country’s roadways has become scary and unacceptable and the Police Force will not allow it to continue.

He said that as part of “Operation Safeway” there will be increased traffic patrols during the day and night across the country and random breathalyzer testing.

Mr.Ramnarine said members of the public must also play a role and push for “self preservation”. He said the traveling public must not take chances with their lives and work along with the Police against those errant drivers.

Statistics released by the Guyana Police Force have revealed that speeding is the leading cause for road accidents across the country.

Guyana recorded five road fatalities over the past three days alone.
