Just two weeks after the government said it was in possession of information that suggests some level of collusion between the Police and persons who landed an illegal aircraft in the North Rupununi, Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan has confirmed the removal of several ranks stationed in the area.
He said the removal from the area does not indicate that the ranks are fingered in any illegality.
“In the Disciplined Forces, we move around people and the fact that certain things happen sometimes we move around people. Not because they are involved, it doesn’t necessarily follow that they are involved but yes some people have been moved,” he said.
Ramjattan told journalists that as an investigation continues, he would rather await the findings of that investigation before he offers any additional comment.
“The investigation is ongoing and I don’t want to jump to any conclusions before that is completed,” he added.
While announcing the establishment of a special drone unit earlier this month, State Minister Joseph Harmon had said there is some Information which suggests a level of collusion with the police and persons who landed the illegal aircraft here.
That information, he said, will inform the way the government will deal with the deployment of ranks in the areas.
Just weeks after discovering an illegal airstrip in the Santa Fe, North Rupununi area, Police investigators found the illegal aircraft on another illegal airstrip in the area.
The Police said initially that after the aircraft landed, ranks reported that they spotted three men running away from the aircraft.
Amid allegations, it is yet to be confirmed whether those ranks were paid to let the men go.
Two Men from the town of Lethem were last week remanded to prison after being charged with conspiring with a businessman to build one of the illegal Airstrip.
