Police woman charged for fraud after turning down relationship with Facebook friend who sent her money

A female Police Constable found herself in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this morning facing fraud charges over money that she allegedly received from a male friend she met on social media site, Facebook.

21-year old Kezia Hall of  Mandela Avenue, Ruimveldt, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to the charge of fraud. She pleaded not guilty.

It is alleged that on May 27, 2016, Hall’s Facebook friend, Theodore Chesney, entrusted her with the sum of $68,000 for the purpose of safekeeping, but she fraudulently converted the money to her own use and benefit.

The young police officer was represented by prominent  Attorney Nigel Hughes, who told the court that the defendant was befriended by the foreigner, Theodore Chesney, on Facebook and he became “enchanted” by her.

The court was told that Chesney would usually send sums of money from time to time for Hall to purchase gifts for herself.

Eventually the man travelled to Guyana and reportedly demanded relations with the defendant who refused to turned down his romantic advances.

Hughes continued that after Hall refused to give in to the man’s demands,  he became annoyed and filed the allegations against the young woman.

The court was told that after the young police woman was charged, the man reportedly told her that he would drop the case if she have a love relationship with him.

Hughes indicated that he had written to the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) to relate the basis of the charge.

He further told the court that the defendant has an unblemished record in the Police Force and does not pose a flight risk.

Hall was subsequently granted self bail and is to return to court on November 28.
