Policeman shot dead while pursuing escaped prisoner

Police Detective constable Seeburn Elias was shot dead on Monday evening as he attempted to arrest a young man who had earlier escaped police custody at the Georgetown Hospital.

According to a police report just after 7 pm on Monday, 23 year old prisoner Delon Abrams who was under police guard seeking treatment at the hospital managed to overpower his police guard, relieve the officer of his weapon and escape into the Alberttown.

The prisoner who was still in handcuffs when he escaped caused a commotion as he bolted from the Georgetown hospital. Patients and medical staff were seen running in all direction as the man escaped.

A number of police officers gave chase and were able to corner the armed prisoner in a yard in 4th Street Alberttown. A number of shots were fired during the attempts to arrest the  man.

It was during one of the efforts to arrest the escaped prisoner that police Detective Constable Elias was shot to his left side as he got into a scuffle with the armed escaped prisoner. The policeman was not armed.

The policeman was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital where he died. The prisoner was captured and the firearm recovered.

The young prisoner was taken into police custody earlier in the day after he was badly beaten by residents of South Ruimveldt who accused him of trying to break into a home.
