PPP fires off at Venezuelan Opposition over anti-Maduro protests

Guyana’s governing party, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has launched a barrage of criticism in Venezuela against the Opposition parties there as anti government protests continue in Caracas.

In a statement, the PPP said it has extended its solidarity “with the Government and people of Venezuela in what appeared to be a well orchestrated attempt by the opposition parties with backing from local and overseas reactionary groups to destabilize the democratically elected Maduro administration from office.”

According to the party, it has been following the developments in the neighbouring state and condemns “in the strongest possible terms the loss of innocent lives by provocateurs whose only objective is the reverse the clock of history and restore the old order based on privileges for the wealthy class at the expense of the poor and the downtrodden.”

The party said it applauds the “enormous economic and social gains made by the Venezuelan government under the charismatic leadership of the late Hugo Chavez and now President Maduro on behalf of  the Venezuelan people in particular the ordinary working people.”

“The political opposition had hoped that with the passing of Hugo Chavez the Bolivarian revolution would have lost momentum. However, much their chagrin and disappointment the aspirations and dreams of Simon Bolivar for a free, democratic and just order in Latin America is continuing unabated”, the PPP statement said.

Students and the Opposition parties in Venezuela have been leading protests for over a week against the Government in the Spanish speaking South American nation. The Venezuelan economy has been seeing a steady decline over the past few years. Guyana has been developing closer ties with Venezuela and the Maduro administration.
