PPP raises more questions about Government Advisors

The opposition People’s Progressive Party on Thursday challenged the list of Government Advisors recently released by the APNU+AFC coalition government and accused the administration of deliberately omitting names and in the process attempting to mislead the National Assembly.

Following inquiries by the PPP, the government released the names of six paid Ministerial Advisors and 33 Honorary government advisors in the National Assembly.

But the opposition party does not believe that the list represents all of the advisors employed by the government within the various Ministries.

Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira told reporters on Thursday that the Party is aware that budgetary provisions were made for advisors in almost all the Ministries.

She said based on what the Party has been able to track in the press, several names were omitted from the list provided to the National Assembly.

These names are inclusive of Vincent Alexander and Ruel Johnson who are Advisors in the Ministry of Education; Enrico Woolford, who is an Advisor to the Minister of Telecommunications and Clayton Hall who is the Advisor to the Minister of Natural Resources.

Teixeira said there are others but this is the extent to which the Party was able track.

Among the paid Ministerial Advisors appointed by the coalition government are Cheryl Sampson and Allan Munroe, both Advisors on Education; Ndbibi Schweirs, Advisor on Natural Resources; Lance Carberry, Advisor on Constitutional Reform; Mervin Williams, Advisor on Indigenous People’s Affairs and Kenneth Jordan, Advisor on Public Infrastructure.

State Minister Joseph Harmon also released the qualification, salaries and remuneration of these Advisors in a written response to the PPP. All the Advisors are entitled to non-taxable vacation allowance, leave and gratuity while a few enjoy duty free concessions.

According to the response, Jordan is raking in the highest amount in salary monthly at $600,000. He is a trained teacher with a Masters in Public administration. Harmon said these individuals were selected on the basis of their qualifications and experience.

Questions regarding advisors were raised during the 2016 budget debates and after it was reported that Brian Tiwarie was appointed Advisor to the Minister of State.

His appointment was revoked by the President.
