PPP ready to expose skeletons in Moses’ cupboard

The Leader of the Alliance for Change Khemraj Ramjattan and the party’s Chairman Nigel Hughes have both indicated their desire to see AFC Member of Parliament Moses Nagamootoo lead the party into the next National Elections as its Presidential Candidate.

But even as the AFC is getting set for the possible early elections and a Nagamootoo led party, the governing party which Nagamootoo called home for decades before joining the AFC, is preparing to pull some skeleton’s out of Nagamootoo’s closet when the campaign gets underway.

Nagamootoo is believed to have helped the AFC significantly during the last elections to make in roads into the strong hold of the PPP’s Berbice base. His candidacy as the Presidential nominee in the next elections could possibly eat away at more support for the PPP, according to political watchers.

The PPP is however saying that it is not too worried and at a Monday morning press conference, PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee dismissed any concerns about the impact a Nagamootoo led AFC could have on the PPP.

Asked if the party is worried about its former senior member leading the AFC into the next elections Rohee said “If it worries us? No, I think it will help us. We have so much on Mr. Nagamootoo”.

He added that “Mr. Nagamootoo has so many skeletons in his cupboard and not all have been disclosed as yet, some have been disclosed but there are much more to be disclosed”. The PPP General Secretary would not go into any detail about the “skeletons” in Nagamootoo’s cupboards but admitted that some have been around since Nagamootoo was a member of the PPP.

Since leaving the PPP, Moses Nagamootoo has been adamant that there needs to be a change in government. He has accused the PPP of being involved in corrupt practices and has said that the party has moved away from the teachings and lessons of its founders Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Mrs. Janet Jagan. When Dr. Jagan died, Nagamootoo was convinced that he would have been led to the helm of the party to continue the Jagan legacy. But the party turned instead to Jagan’s wife, Janet Jagan and later to Bharrat Jagdeo  who would become President.

Nagamootoo has been very vocal about the need for change in the local political landscape and has said that Guyana’s youths must take charge and lead the country out of its current problems with new leadership.
