PPP says Observers duped into believing elections were free and fair

As it is getting ready to launch nationwide protests against the results of the just concluded elections, the opposition People’s Progressive Party believes that the international observer missions that were in Guyana for the elections were all duped into believing the elections were free and fair.

The governments of the United States, Canada and Great Britain along with all of the observer missions have declared that the 2015 elections were free, fair and credible.

The PPP believes the elections were fraudulent and it wants a recount although a new President has been sworn in and a new government is taking shape with the support of the PPP transition team.

In a statement late on Tuesday following a meeting of its Central Committee, the PPP said “the meeting recognized that the observers were duped into believing that the elections were free and fair.”

According to the opposition party, “the main aspect of the electoral process which was to observe the counting of ballots and the verification of statement of poll was left entirely in the hands of the GECOM officials many of who are activists and supporters of the APNU-AFC.”

The PPP Central Committee also reiterated a call for the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission to resign from his position because of the elections results. The Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally has rubbished the PPP’s request and has indicated that he has no intention to resign from office at this time.

But the PPP remains convinced that it won the 2015 elections and was cheated out of the office. The party said based on the statements of poll from its party agents, it won the majority and it intends to move to the court to get that majority.

In the meantime, the party is also getting ready to move into the National Assembly and occupy the opposition benches. It won 32 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly.
