PPP will speak on Ramson’s future in Parliament when it is ready – Teixeira

The Parliamentary Opposition on Wednesday refused to entertain questions on the political future of its MP Charles Ramson Jr. who is likely to give up his Parliamentary post to study abroad.

Despite the weekly press conference being geared towards addressing matters related to parliamentary affairs, Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira blocked questions on Ramson’s political future in the National Assembly.

In fact, MP Ramson stood in the very room at Freedom House and remained silent when questions were put to the panel which included Teixeira and MP Anil Nandlall.

“We will not be dealing with that issue today. At the appropriate time we shall. However, the focus of today is on the racial and political discrimination. That is the issue we are dealing with today,” she said.

News Source had reported earlier this week that Ramson is likely to tender his resignation from the National Assembly as he prepares to take up the Chevening Scholarship that has been offered by the British Government.

Ramson has not denied that report and neither has the PPP indicated whether it would be willing to accept the resignation or grant him a one year leave of absence.

The Opposition Chief Whip insisted that the Party was not ready to address the issue and signalled that a decision has not been taken.

“The party makes it decisions accordingly and will reveal that at the appropriate time,” she added.

Teixeira said “he has been a good MP, he is serving us and when at the appropriate time we will announce, if there is any announcement to be made, on what is going on.”

The Chief Whip said the Party will make its choices and decisions at the appropriate time.

Ramson, who is an Attorney, is one of more than ten young Guyanese who applied for and was granted the prestigious scholarship to complete his Masters at a British University.

He is expected to begin his studies in September this year and will have to move to the UK full time to complete the scholarship.

News Source understands that he has already accepted the offer but the PPP, which holds a one seat minority in the House, will have to make a decision on whether to accept his resignation or grant him a leave of absence.
