President and Opposition Leader to meet on GECOM Chairman nominees

President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo are to meet later this month at State House to address the Elections Commission Chairman nomination issue.

On Friday, the President rejected the second list of nominees that was submitted by Mr. Jagdeo.

President Granger indicated that in keeping with the Constitution, the nominees should be persons who are not unacceptable to the President.

The President said his decision came following his perusal of the curriculum vitae that were submitted for the six nominees.

Mr. Jagdeo has already indicated that his party will fight against any attempt by the President to choose a GECOM chairman by himself.

The President in a television interview a few months back, assured that whoever is chosen as Chairman will be someone who shares the confidence and support of both the President and the Opposition Leader.

The Opposition’s legal representative, Attorney Anil Nandlall, in a statement yesterday said it is becoming more and more difficult to come up with the list of nominees.

The Ministry of the Presidency maintains that Mr. Jagdeo “must get it right”.
