President pushes plan to ensure every teacher is University educated

President David Granger on Thursday said it is his hope that every teacher would emerge a University graduate as Guyana aims at universal secondary education and at ensuring that every child receives a sound secondary education.

While addressing the annual National Award Ceremony for outstanding academic performers, President Granger said it was necessary to have properly educated teachers so as to ensure that children have access to quality education.

“We will, therefore, place great emphasis on the education of teachers. We would like to ensure that, over the next 15 years, all teachers in our school system are university graduates so that our children can benefit from this education,” the Guyanese Head of State said, while also committing to providing teachers with the tools to do their jobs.

He said education must also be accessible for all, while noting that Guyana is at the start line to ensuring that it reduces disparities and allow for greater equality in the education system.

The President said “each child, therefore, must be in school if that child is to avoid or overcome poverty. A child who is not in school is being disadvantaged,”.

He noted his government’s support for ensuring that every school is well-equipped with laboratories and libraries. “These policies − every child in secondary school; every teacher being university educated; every secondary school being well-equipped − must be the foundation upon which we will refashion our education system to produce quality citizens who can have the knowledge, skills and attitude to secure gainful employment and to become competitive in the global market place,” he said.

According to the  President, Universal Secondary Education is the foundation on which Guyana can improve human rights, social cohesion, personal wealth, and better health.

The President wished continued success to those who were granted awards. He said he hopes that their thirst for knowledge never quenches or desire for self-improvement never diminishes and commitment to serving this country remains steadfast and unceasing.

Among those awarded were the top performers at Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination Cecil Cox, Larissa Whiltshire and Sasha Woodroffe all of Queen’s College and Shonta Noel of St Rose’s High, who all secured Grade One passes in six units.

With regard to the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exmanination, Victoria Najab of the Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) Secondary School and Vamanadev Hiralall were also awarded as the two top performers this year along with several others. The top common entrance students also received awards.  (Kurt Campbell for News Source)
