President seeks media’s tolerance over lack of Presidential Press Conferences

On the same day that the independent Stabroek News in its editorial lashed out at the President for over the lack of Presidential press conferences, the President said his busy schedule was responsible for his lack of frequent and structured engagements with the local press corps.

Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of an ICT Meeting this morning, the President asked for tolerance on the issue.

He said it is “very challenging” to deal with both his overseas and domestic engagements at the same time but promised that as soon as he gets the opportunity he will engage the press.

“I want to ask the media to be tolerant… my heart is in the right place but right now I have had a really difficult period of public engagements and overseas travel,” he explained.

Mr. Granger singled out issues in the sugar, petroleum and security sectors which have demanded his attentions in recent months but overserved that equally important is his relation with the press.

He said last year he missed a few appointments abroad in order to be able to deal with domestic issues.

President Granger has only held two press conferences since taking office in May 2015.

He has been widely criticized for his lack of engagement with the media but has repeatedly promised to improve his relations in this regard.
