Prime Minister Nagamootoo announces investigation of Government Information Agency

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo who holds responsibility for the public information sector, has announced that an investigation has been launched into the operations of the Government Information Agency.

During an address to the National Assembly, the Prime Minister told the House that during the last administration, GINA would have collected money for the placement of government ads in the state owned Guyana Chronicle and National Communications Network but those funds were never paid over.

He said one of the entities is owed as much as $76 Million for the placement of ads. According to the Prime Minister, GINA may have also been involved in the placement of ads for the People’s Progressive Party while that party was in government.

Mr. Nagamootoo said he intends to restructure the Government Information Agency to do the work it should be doing. He said there will be a smaller agency which does better work in informing the Guyanese people of the work of the Government.

The Head of the Government Information Agency under the PPP Civic administration has since resigned from office.

The Prime Minister also announced that there will be restructuring of the Guyana Chronicle and the National Communications Network. The Boards for both state media houses are expected to be replaced.
