The People’s Progressive Party intends to carry out peaceful protests and vigils as part of its non-cooperation with the Government of Guyana.
The PPP announced on Friday evening that it has been meeting with its regional representatives and is moving ahead with its non-cooperation with the government.
The PPP maintains that the appointment of retired Justice James Patterson as Chairman of GECOM, was “unconstitutional, illegal and Undemocratic” and represents a total departure from the “Carter Formula’.
According to the PPP “this latest unilateral act by the President to appoint retired Justice Patterson is another act in a long list of examples of executive abuses and lawlessness, we, the Guyanese people, have witnessed since the installation of the APNU/AFC Coalition government.”
The Opposition party has explained that its stance of ‘non-cooperation’ with the APNU/AFC government was unanimously approved as the only viable means to expose the government over the President’s decision.
The party intends to challenge the decision by the President in the Court and will possibly approach the Caribbean Court of Justice if the need arises.
It also intends to undertake meetings countrywide to sensitize the Guyanese people and to use other means, including social media to explain its position.
The PPP also plans to meet with Guyanese locally and abroad to brief them on the latest development.
President David Granger has defended his decision to move ahead with the appointment of the GECOM Chairman. He said the move was in keeping with the constitution.
