Gunmen on Thursday attacked and robbed clerks attached to the Ministry of Public Works of over $8 Million that was being taken to the Ministry for payment of salaries.

Public Works Minister Robeson Benn confirmed the midday robbery to some Members of Parliament as he made his way into the National Assembly.

Early reports indicate that the clerks who were in the company of security guards had just made their way into the Ministry’s compound when they were attacked and relieved of the money. Most Government workers are paid through the commercial banks.

It is unclear why the large sum of money was being ferried from a commercial bank to the Ministry’s main office. A Police investigation is underway.
